In order to succeed in this online course, you must be comfortable working with technology. At a minimum, you must possess the following technical skills:
- Ability to use the Internet in an effective and efficient manner, including installation and management of browser plug-ins and add-ons.
- Basic knowledge about the operation of a computer, file management, and software installation.
- Working knowledge of the Canvas learning management system.
- Ability to proficiently search the web for information
- Ability to download and print information from websites
- Ability to download, view, and/or print PDF files

Participation:
This is an online class, so we do not meet in person. I expect you to do the following. Students frequently ask me how to succeed (learn the most and get a good grade). Doing these things will also help you succeed.
(1) Turn in the first assignment. If you do not do that, I am required to request that you be withdrawn without tuition refund or the chance to apply the tuition to another course. I am sure that none of you want to pay for the course and not get the chance to complete the course but not get the tuition refunded, and I am equally sure that if you borrowed to pay for this course or someone else (such as your employer) is paying for this course, that whomever loaned you the money or paid for this course do not want to see you lose the tuition without being able to take the course. The good news is that that is an easily-avoided outcome.
(2) As previously stated, the average of all proctored assessment scores must be a passing percentage (60 percent) in order for you to pass the course regardless of your scores on other assignments.
(3) Log into the course every day. Check announcements when you do. Check your email daily.
(4) Don’t just read my emails, but communicate with me. The only bad question is the one that’s not asked.
(5) Turn in assignments when due, and turn in all parts of each assignment when due. Except for the introduction, all assignments must be turned in by 11:59 PM on Sunday of the week when due.
Some assignments, such as the Property/Bailments discussion in week 1, have more than one assignment listed, and say “Choose one of the following.” Where it says that, you are only required to submit one of the possible assignments. For the discussion board, where replies are required to earn full points, you may reply to a student who chose to submit about a different subject than you submitted. If you respond to more than one, I will not give you extra credit points and will grade the first option you discuss.
I strongly urge you to pay attention to individual due dates as well as how the modules unfold. While the course as a whole is the sum of the assignments, take on each one individually, with its own requirements and own deadline.
(6) Follow the instructions. If the instructions tell you to respond to certain questions, be sure that you answer those questions. If you want to go above and beyond that, you may, but make sure that first you answer the question asked.
(7) Discussions are a vital part of this course. Be respectful to each other. You may of course disagree with your classmates from time to time, but you must follow the standards n the student handbook, which is showing respect for each other and all members of the community. Simply put, treat each other with respect.
(8) Some of you may have taken courses in which you get a penalty for turning in assignments but late, such as 10% penalty for one day, 20% for a second day, and so forth. I do not grade in that manner. Assignments are due on the day due unless I give you an extension. As you’ll see below, if you are going to be late submitting an assignment, send me a message. If you are having trouble, seek help.
(9) Understand now how you’ll be graded. As stated before, you must take all four proctored assessments when scheduled.
(10) For writing assignments, I want to see your analysis. There may be times when you need to quote a source, but if your quote runs more than three lines, you are probably quoting too much and the points I award will reflect that.
(11) Again, for writing assignments, if you use an outside source cite to it. Failing to do that is plagiarism. Don’t do that. Please review the section on “Plagiarism” in the syllabus, and follow it. Citations also need to be for specific parts of your submission.
(12) I strongly urge you to pace yourself. Set aside regular times during the week when you work on this course. There are a lot of assignments during this course. If you try to begin each week’s assignments at 10:00 PM on Sunday evening, I expect you will find yourself falling short quickly. If you are a procrastinator, admit that, set yourself targets for each week, and earlier than Sunday, and discipline yourself to meet those targets. This is a challenging course. Rise to the challenge.
(13) I strongly urge you to write a draft for all assignments, which you revise before turning in. Use spell and grammar check. All submissions must be in standard written English-- Each sentence begins with a capital letter, has a subject and a verb, and ends in a period, exclamation point, or question mark. That includes for the items such as discussion groups. Write your draft in a word document and copy-and-paste when you are ready to submit.
Grading Turnaround Time: Ordinary turn-around time for grading is seven days after the deadline to turn in an assignment. In the interest of grading consistently, I typically wait to post grades until I see all student submissions.
Late Work Policy: I accept late work if you have an emergency, an unexpected thing beyond your control that stops you from completing and turning in assigned work. To get an extension when you experience an emergency, send me an email as soon as it is safe to do so. The extension is not approved until I reply with an approval.
