COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is 90 hours advanced course and divided into two parts focusing on CPT and ICD10 coding and billing. This program will introduce class participants to the basic principles of coding for outpatient and physician services. Instruction will include: beginning through advanced CPT coding. It will cover information about terminology and various procedures, as well as demonstrations and examples on how to look up and code each service in the CPT and ICD10 book. This course will prepare participants to sit for the AAPC, formally American Academy of Professional Coders, Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam.
Medical Coding section focuses an intense review of how to look up and assign ICD-10 and CPT codes according to proper guidelines, differences between ICD-9 and ICD-10, and coding for specialties. It covers the basics of Compliance and HIPAA, insurance policies with an overview of documentation and reimbursements, proper submission of a CMS form by paper and electronically and the E/M guidelines.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
- Identify the purpose of the CPT® , ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS Level II code books
- Understand and apply the official ICD-10-CM coding guidelines
- Apply coding conventions when assigning diagnoses and procedure codes
- Identify the information in appendices of the CPT® code book
- Explain the determination of the levels of E/M services
- Code a wide variety of patient services using CPT® , ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS Level II codes
- List the major features of HCPCS Level II codes
- Provide practical application of coding operative reports and evaluation and management services

- Attendance Policy: Regular Online attendance is required and you are expected to participate in class discussions.
- Assignments: All assignments are due by the due date.
- Class schedule – Monday, Wednesday 6-9:00pm
- Video and audio are required for online courses
- Participation in class assignment is required.
- No Silent cell phones during class.
- Cheating in any form will not be tolerated and may result in a grade of “F” for the course.

Attendance Policy
Attendance can be gauged in an online course.
- Regular participation in the discussion forums
- the timely submission of required assignments
- the prompt notification of problems in the course all constitute “class attendance” online.
Students are expected to participate in all class activities, submit all assignments, and complete all tests and examinations in accordance with the class syllabus and outline. Students who cannot participate in or complete assigned class activities, assignments, tests, and examinations by the designated deadlines owing to extenuating circumstances should contact the instructor prior to any such incidents or immediately following all unforeseen emergencies. Because of the public availability of computers on and off campus, computer problems will not be accepted as a reason for lack of participation. Students who fail to complete both the weekly forum and the weekly quiz by the designated deadline will be considered to have committed an absence. Students who fail to complete the literary essays and/or the midterm/final by the designated deadline will be considered to have committed an absence. Students will be dropped from the course after two absences.
Make-up Policy
All online assignments are due by the due dates unless an excused absence is discussed with the instructor. Any assignment submitted after the due date are subject to a 10% reduction in the grade PER DAY.

Academic Honesty:
Students are expected to conduct themselves in an honorable manner in all of their academic work. All forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited at John Tyler Community College. Cheating on quizzes, tests, and examinations, unauthorized cooperation between students, unauthorized help from others, plagiarism, and the unauthorized use of software, databases, or expert advice that is contrary to the instructions of the professor are acts of academic dishonesty. Other Requirements
- Internet browser—Firefox or Chrome Internet browser (free download) in addition to Safari or Internet Explorer (one of which you should already have.) No single browser works flawlessly with all aspects of Blackboard and/or Canvas.
- Microsoft Word 2007 or 2010, or a program that can convert to .doc/.docx for submission of written work -compatible word processor.
- Anti-virus Software: Make sure that you have a reliable anti-virus program and that its virus definitions are kept-up to date. You can download one for free through Blackboard.
- Because we will be watching short videos and clips, you need sound capabilities on your computer.
- Lack of computer access, computer malfunctions, and technical difficulties are not acceptable reasons for incomplete or late work. If you have unreliable internet or computer capabilities, you should routinely use the computers available on campus at both locations.
