Course Description

This course presents a broad introduction to the functioning of business enterprises with the U.S. economic framework.  Introduces economic systems, essential elements of business organization, production, human resource management, marketing finance and risk management. Helps the student develop a large and varied business vocabulary.

Course Content/Instructional Goals

This course focuses on enhancing the students’ understanding of:

  1. Private enterprise and the U.S. Economy
  2. The impact of globalization on U.S. Business
  3. How a business is organized and functions
  4. The role and relationships of management, labor, government, and society
  5. The ethical role of business
  6. How goods are marketed and distributed to satisfy customers wants
  7. Career opportunities in business

Instructional Procedures

Course material will be presented by lectures, questions, class and case discussions, and appropriate articles as we meet each Monday & Wednesday from 1-2:20. This is a synchronous class.  Students are expected to attend class in real time, and attendance is important for success in this course.  Any assignments missed due to absences may receive a failing grade. Students are responsible for tests and work. If a test or work is submitted late (up to 1 week max), 10 points will be deducted. If not submitted within a week after the due date, a zero will be given.

Introduction to Business, Openstax. A laptop or desktop is required for this course.

Course Requirements

Punctual and regular class attendance is required.  Students should read required readings prior to class and be prepared to participate in class discussions, including discussion of study questions.  The final grade will be based upon attendance, participation, homework and exams.

Test 1 will cover Ch. 1-2 & 4-5; Test 2 will cover Ch. 6-9; and Test 3 will cover Ch. 11-12 & 14-16. The last exam will be given during finals.  Make up exams are allowed, if scheduling can be arranged, and may include essay questions. Ten points will be deducted.  Late Application Analysis will not be accepted.  Grades will be determined based upon the total points earned.  The following scale will be utilized in computing grades:        

                        A= 90% - 100%

                        B= 80% - 89%

                        C= 70% - 79%

                        D= 60% - 69%

                        F=  0% - 59%

Academic Conduct
Academic conduct will be in accordance with and governed by the college policy enumerated in the Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Catalog.

Plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated.  Any student found cheating on examinations, or submitting the work of others will at a minimum receive a zero on the work in question.

Repeating a Course

Normally, a student is limited to two (2) enrollments in the same credit course.  A student desiring to take a course more than twice should formally request permission through a counselor in Student Services.  This request will be forwarded to the Dean of Instruction and Student Services (see DSLCC catalog).
