Step 4 Plan & Schedule A Faculty Orientation

Revisit your college planning steps to verify college readiness! Ask yourself...

Have staff been selected? How will an orientation be conducted?
Can a faculty orientation be conducted at the DOC facility/by people knowledgeable about DOC procedures?
Are books, supplies, and resources approved by the jail or VADOC facility? For example, many facilities will not allow hard-cover books for security reasons. Are videos, DVDS, or flash/thumb drives allowed? Is there a minimum number of handouts you can bring? Do you have to collect anything before leaving the facility? How will they be secured if any materials are left on-site? Are staff aware they may not leave pens (esp. ballpoint ones), staples, paperclips, etc. with students or on site?
Have all VCCS and VADOC approvals been requested and documented?
How should VCCS faculty interact with carceral students differently than one would with traditional college students? Are there taboo topics or sensitive issues that one must consider before each lesson?
